Moscow firm moves North American HQ to Phoenix as it ramps up ZigBee wireless applications

MeshNetics opened an office about a month ago at 5110 N. 44th St., moving from Bellevue, Wash., said spokesman Alex Leonov from Moscow. The company announced this week that Pete Secor, a technology industry veteran whose resume includes Advanced Micro Devices, Fairchild Semiconductor and MetaLink Corp., will be heading up the new office.

Ok, I stole the title from Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle but it was just too good to pass up. In this case the “mote” is a small ZigBee node from Crossbow Technology.

Among the several home networking technologies available today, Wi-Fi, powerline communication (PLC) and Bluetooth are adopted by many makers across South Korea, Taiwan and mainland China. Suppliers are also looking to adopt ZigBee and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for their equipment and devices.

The market for wireless sensor networks using tiny, low-powered sensor devices called motes that can measure everything from soil temperature to motion is about to take off, and Moteiv Corp., a San Francisco startup, hopes to cash in big with products it says are smaller and easier to use than the competition's.

TI Delivers Location Detection SoC For ZigBee Wireless Sensor

Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced the company’s first system-on-chip (SoC) solution with a hardware location engine targeting low-power ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor networking applications. The CC2431, from the company’s Chipcon product line, targets applications such as asset and equipment tracking, inventory control, patient monitoring, remote controls, security and commissioning networks. The device is supported by TI’s Z-Stack protocol stack.

Zigbee motes boast open hardware, software

 A university spin-off company in Spain is readying an inexpensive Zigbee-based "mote" sensor built entirely with open-source hardware and software. Libelium's 120-Euro SquidBee will ship this summer, optionally with a Debian-based WiFi access point that can bridge Zigbee and WiFi mesh networks.
