Zigbee vs Z-Wave on the Home Front
Filed Dec 06, 2006 at 4:12 AM ·
The products each use a wireless home automation protocol that allows base stations and sensors from different manufacturers to work together. But competition means that two of the major technologies, ZigBee and Z-Wave, do not mix.
It is a situation similar to the HD-DVD versus Blu-ray battle in high-definition video, or, back in the 1980s, Betamax versus VHS. Products that work with Home Heartbeat carry the ZigBee label (listed at zigbee.org). They are not compatible with the Motorola Homesight’s cousins, known as Z-Wave products (listed at zwavealliance.org).
